Top cop in Nancy Guthrie case faces REMOVAL as investigation enters day 45

Nanos, a Democrat, is facing the recall effort after locals have said he “embarrassed” the county on the national stage, according to the New York Post. Republican congressional candidate Daniel Butierez has already initiated the recall process and has 500 volunteers set to collect signatures in an effort to remove Nanos from his position.

“This is a bipartisan effort. It’s not like we’re trying to get signatures from one party or the other,” Butierez said. “He has been an embarrassment to Tucson and to Pima County with this Nancy Guthrie case.”

Last week, allegations surfaced that the Sheriff lied under oath when questioned about his experience in police work. Butierez said that deputies in the Sheriff’s office wanted to launch the recall effort themselves, but they were “afraid of repercussions from Sheriff Nanos.”

Police in Pima County “had a unanimous vote of no confidence” on Friday regarding Nanos. “I decided I’d do it because I’m a congressional candidate, I’m already in the spotlight, and I don’t see Nanos messing with me," Butierez said.

The congressional candidate now has 120 days to get 25 percent of the total votes that took place in the 2024 sheriff’s election, or around 120,000 signatures. “I’m probably going to go for 135,000 signatures,” Butierez said. “Right now, we have almost 500 volunteers who want to get signatures, and five notaries to notarize the pages for everyone.”

If the campaign is successful, Nanos will have five days to decide if he will resign or call for a Special Recall Election.
