Toronto man charged in connection with death of toddler after allegedly poisoning her cereal
Francis Ngugi, 45 years old and residing in Toronto, has been charged in relation to the death of a three-year-old girl who died after eating what authorities have determined to be a bowl of poisoned cereal.
Francis Ngugi, 45 years old and residing in Toronto, has been charged in relation to the death of a three-year-old girl who died after eating what authorities have determined to be a bowl of poisoned cereal.
There appears to have been a controlled substance placed into the cereal, which made two girls who consumed it sick, and caused both of them to be rushed to the hospital.
Bernice Wamala, unfortunately, was one of the young girls that didn't make it. She died in hospital despite all attempts to save her.
Maurine Mirembe, Wamala's mother, told CTV News Toronto that her daughter was taking place in a sleepover at another apartment in the building in the Scarborough area of Toronto where the two of them resided.
She was called the following morning because Bernice was vomiting and obviously in distress following her breakfast.
"When I went upstairs, I found Bernice laying in a chair. She was so weak and when I checked her mouth it was grey. I even squeezed her middle finger to see if the blood was moving, but nothing."
An investigation was launched on Mar. 7 2021 following Bernice's death. This has led to the police arresting and charging Ngugi. He is being charged with criminal negligence causing death, two counts of administering a noxious substance, and a further two counts of unlawfully causing bodily harm.
The investigation is ongoing, and court dates for Mr. Ngugi are pending.
