Toronto mayor slams ‘chair girl’—says she should have gone to jail
Toronto Mayor John Tory made it known that he believes Marcella Zoia (aka “chair girl”) should have gone to jail for throwing a chair over the balcony of a high-rise onto a busy highway.
Toronto Mayor John Tory made it known that he believes Marcella Zoia, aka "chair girl," should have gone to jail for throwing a chair over the balcony of a high-rise onto a busy highway, according to CP24.
Zoia pleaded guilty in February of 2019 for mischief endangering life, with Tory saying that "she should have gone to jail," adding that "she should've gone to jail for enough time to send a message to her and everyone else."
Zoia will not spend any time in jail, but received two years of probation, 150 hours of community service, and a fine of $2,000.
CP24 reported that Tory said the sentence for the crime shows a "disconnect between expectation and reality some experience in the Canadian justice system."
Tory went on to say that the penalty received is "not a deterrent," and that "the sentencing demonstrates a kind of out of touch aspect of the justice system we see time to time and it concerns me greatly."
“This is a person who even afterwards it seems didn’t learn any lessons,” Tory added.
The Crown suggested the possibility of a social media ban as part of the sentence, but Justice Mara Greene turned this down, according to CP24.
“I think the idea the Crown had to keep her off social media, for I would have said five years, that was a good idea that was not taken up,” Tory concluded.
