TPUSA Frontlines exposes loopholes, visa overstays, and human smuggling networks that funnel foreigners into US across Canadian border

They expose that the issue extends beyond missing students, stating that Canada's visa and immigration policies have created a pipeline exploited by migrants seeking to reach the US through visa overstays, legal loopholes, and human smuggling networks.

Tayler Hansen and Kian Simone travel along Canada's southern border, where they say they meet with an alleged human smuggler who operates through social media. They investigate demographic changes in Brampton, document illegal crossing routes, test response times by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, (RCMP) and interview residents living near the Canada-US border.

The documentary unveils the weaknesses in Canada's once-strong immigration enforcement as the delcining nation has become a staging ground for immigrants attempting to enter the United States and argues that the northern US border is more vulnerable than many Americans realize.

Tayler Hansen traveled to Brampton, Ontario, a city that has undergone significant demographic change due to immigration. Hansen stated that more than half of Brampton’s roughly 750,000 residents were of South Asian descent and argued that official figures did not account for individuals who had overstayed tourist or student visas. He also said that Canada did not comprehensively track departures of foreign nationals, contributing to an estimated high number of visa overstays, and contended that some of those individuals had later entered the United States illegally.

Hansen was joined by Toronto-based journalist Harrison Faulkner, who pointed to a large statue of the Hindu deity Hanuman as a symbol of what he described as Canada’s changing demographics. Faulkner also discussed the growth of so-called “diploma mills,” describing them as satellite campuses that expanded during the surge in international student enrollment. He said many of the institutions primarily recruited students from India who paid high tuition with the goal of eventually obtaining Canadian permanent residency.

According to Faulkner, Canada’s international student population increased by 190 percent between 2019 and 2023, reaching more than one million active student visas at its peak. He further claimed that dozens of unlicensed or unrecognized colleges operated out of strip malls during that period, describing them as part of a system that accelerated pathways to permanent residency.

Immigration has become one of Canada's most divisive political issues in recent years, with much of the debate centered on Roxham Road, an unofficial border crossing between Quebec and New York that became synonymous with the country's surge in irregular migration.

Beginning in 2017, tens of thousands of asylum seekers entered Canada through Roxham Road afterthe abusing of a loophole in the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA), an treaty requiring most refugee claimants to seek asylum in the first safe country they enter. Under the agreement as it existed at the time migrants who simply just showed up at an official land port of entry from the United States were generally ineligible to claim asylum in Canada though the rule did not apply to those who crossed the border between official ports of entry.

That distinction transformed Roxham Road into Canada's busiest irregular border crossing. Rather than being turned back, migrants who crossed there were detained by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), identified, and permitted to file asylum claims through Canada's refugee system. The then-Trudeau government consistently referred to the crossings as "irregular migration," arguing that while entering outside an official border checkpoint violates border procedures, individuals physically present in Canada are entitled under Canadian law to have their refugee claims heard. Critics, however, argued that the policy effectively rewarded illegal border crossings by allowing migrants to bypass the restrictions that applied at official ports of entry.

Between 2017 and the closure of the loophole in 2023, over 86,000 asylum seekers entered Canada through Roxham Road. This huge influx helped break apart the country's once respected immigration and refugee systems, causing lengthy case backlogs that left many claims unresolved for years. Federal, provincial, and municipal governments also faced mounting costs associated with emergency housing, healthcare, legal aid, and other publicly funded services provided to asylum seekers while their claims were pending.

Conservative politicians at the time, including several provincial premiers, and immigration critics repeatedly accused the Trudeau government of failing to act despite years of warnings that Roxham Road had become a magnet for irregular migration. They argued the government allowed a legal loophole to remain open long after it became apparent that it was driving thousands of unauthorized border crossings. Critics also contended the policy undermined confidence in Canada's immigration system by creating the perception that those who crossed the border illegally received faster access to Canada's asylum process than many applicants waiting overseas through legal immigration programs.

The Roxham Road route was largely shut down in March 2023 after Canada and the United States expanded the Safe Third Country Agreement to apply across the entire land border instead of only at official ports of entry. Irregular crossings at Roxham Road fell dramatically almost overnight.

The controversy unfolded against the backdrop of historically high immigration levels. Canada admitted approximately 471,000 permanent residents in 2023 and roughly 485,000 in 2024—among the highest per-capita legal immigration rates in the developed world. The country also saw record growth in temporary foreign workers, international students, and other temporary residents, contributing to Canada's fastest population growth in decades.

A slew of concerns over housing affordability, with Canada having some of the most unattainable houses in the world for its populace, failing public infrastructure, falling healthcare capacity, and exploding population growth eventually prompted the federal government to change courses which it appears to have stuck with since the transition over to the Mark Carney government. The government now announced lower permanent resident targets of 395,000 in 2025, 380,000 in 2026, and 365,000 in 2027, while also reducing the number of temporary residents and also pushing out students who overstayed visas, who mainly coem from the Indian subcontinent.
