Trans Virginia man sentenced to 25 years in prison for making child sex abuse material—he coerced victims with his fake breasts
Joseph Downing Barnes Jr., 35, of Virginia Beach, used online video chat sessions to prey on his victims.

A trans-identifying man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for producing child sex abuse material in Virginia. Joseph Downing Barnes Jr., 35, of Virginia Beach, used online video chat sessions to prey on his victims, who were boys between the ages of 10 and 15 years old, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Barnes, a convicted sex offender who self-identifies as a woman, exposed his fake breasts to his victims online in order to get the boys to perform sexually explicit acts on video. This included the boys showing their penises and masturbating on video. Barnes saved the webchats to his Google account after recording them. According to court records, the victims thought Barnes was a biological woman.

He was indicted on May 14, 2026, and pleaded guilty to one count of production of child pornography. Barnes was sentenced to prison on October 20, 2026. A federal judge immediately ordered Barnes remanded to custody. Upon the completion of his 25-year stint behind bars, Barnes will be on a lifetime of supervised release, according to the conditions of his sentencing.
The child predator was previously convicted in 2016 in the Eastern District of Virginia for distributing child sex abuse material. He served 108 months in prison for that conviction, records show.
The most recent offenses occurred between July 11, 2025, and August 29, 2025. Google reported Barnes’ account to authorities after discovering that one of its users had uploaded approximately 50 suspected files of child sexual abuse material, according to court documents.
