Despite facing massive deficits, the Federal and Ontario governments are giving Ford Motor Co. over $250 million to mass produce electric cars and their batteries at Ford’s Oakville Plant.
The announcement will be made later today by both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Doug Ford at a joint press conference.
The spending is part of a nearly $2 billion dollar three-year agreement between Ford Motor Co. and Unifor, the union representing Canadian auto workers.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only the Premier and company representatives will be on site at the Oakville plant, reports The Canadian Press. Trudeau and Unifor president Jerry Dias will join virtually from Kanata, Ontario, where the company's connectivity and innovation centre is located.
Ford Motor Co. had previously announced 450 layoffs at their Oakville Plant following the re-election of Justin Trudeau, however Dias says that the new deal will help save 3000 of the remaining jobs.
The Liberals have stated that this deal will contribute to their ambitious plan of making Canadian greenhouse gas emissions net zero by 2050. On top of the spending committed today, Trudeau has pledged to spend $300 million to create a fast charging station across Canada for electric cars. About 2% of current car sales in Canada are electric vehicles.
