In a press conference on Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he would increase child benefits so to relive some of the coronavirus related pressure from parents, according to Global News.
This benefit increase is only temporary and will be introduced in the coming months—providing almost 2 billion to parents who are unable to work, or who have been laid off as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
This increase will come to about $300 per child so long as the parent qualifies for the program.
Speaking to reporters at the press conference, Trudeau said "families with young kids are going to find the coming months especially difficult with school closures and additional child care responsibilities."
"To take some of that pressure off, our government will temporarily boost the CCB in the coming months," he added.
Before this policy was announced, parents who have two children and make anywhere between $45,000 - $65,000 per year, are entitled to $900 per month. With this new policy, the amount will be increased to $1,200 per month.
Single parents will be entitled to an even greater sum of money, coming in at around $1,500 per month.
