BREAKING: Trudeau government may cancel Canada Day

The Department of Canadian Heritage, led by the ever-controversial Liberal Steven Guilbeault, said in a statement that they "are monitoring the situation closely. We are working on various contingencies for all events including Canada Day celebrations based on the advice of public health authorities.”

No decision has been made yet as it is almost impossible to forecast the severity of the coronavirus pandemic. "We will have more information to share in the near future," said Guilbeault.

Canada's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Theresa Tam has also warned Canadians over the potential for a second outbreak: "we will need to be prepared for another wave potentially," she said.

"You’re going to have to prepare that this virus is going to have more than one wave. That is the only prudent thing to do."

The last time the government chose to cancel Canada Day was in 1976 as a means to cut down on the then government's excessive spending. At that point, the federal government's deficit was a meagre $6.6 billion. In 2020, that figure is projected to stand at over $100 billion.

Canada is in this for the long-haul. Dr. Tam previously offered little hope that the pandemic would be resolved by spring, saying that "it will not be eradicated from the world in months."
