Justin Trudeau's Liberal government has significant ambitions for the restart of Canada's economy, with one Liberal official telling Reuters that the "taps are really going to be turned on."
In his incoming September throne speech, the prime minister is expected to introduce a series of sweeping (and expensive) social programs, focusing on climate change and welfare.
Trudeau government officials have stated that the prime minister believes Canada's economic recovery will be essential to his legacy.
"This is our chance to build a more resilient Canada, a Canada that is healthier and safer, greener and more competitive, a Canada that is more welcoming and more fair," said the prime minister this week.
A similar message was made by Trudeau's new Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland who said that the "restart" of Canada's economy should be focused on green energy.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference, Chrystia Freeland–who took over from Bill Morneau on Monday–said that "the restart of our economy needs to be green."
Freeland continued, saying the economy "also needs to be equitable, it needs to be inclusive and we need to focus very much on jobs and growth."
"This is a once in a lifetime challenge for our whole country, and our commitment as a government is to do whatever it takes to support Canadians as we get through this challenge," she concluded.
As a result of the pandemic, Canada's debt has exploded to over an eye-watering $1 trillion. Canada's government spent more on this pandemic then they did the entirety of World War Two.
Every Canadian who is born in 2020 will owe an astonishing $22,000 to the federal government. As a result of this recent report, it seems that this government spending will not stop anytime soon.
