Trudeau Minister Dominic LeBlanc warned Canadians yesterday that the next federal election will be disrupted by groups espousing "racism and hatred."
As a result of this, LeBlanc has created a $7 million program that will be on the lookout for fake news operatives, according to Blacklock's Reporter. It is worth noting that no investigators found any of these groups in the 2019 election.
"In the next general election in Canada, I think we should just assume the threat environment and the threat context have increased since our last election," said LeBlanc.
The minister did not explain why this was the case, nor did he provide any examples of these racist groups.
After the 2019 election, federal investigators found no evidence of fake news or electoral manipulation.
Despite this, LeBlanc said that his work "is really never done. Malicious actors who use technology to threaten democracies are always adapting and so must we."
LeBlanc continued by saying, "elections are necessarily contact events, but people expect to have free and open discourse based on reliable information and not be manipulated by foreign state actors, by disinformation."
