BREAKING: Trudeau addresses serious allegations of mistreatment of residents in long-term care homes
Justin Trudeau made some emotional comments in a press conference today regarding allegations of mistreatment and mismanagement in Ontario’s long-term care homes.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made some emotional comments in a press conference today regarding the state of Ontario's long-term care homes.
Trudeau discussed what Canadian Forces members saw when they entered these care homes, saying the reports made his "emotions range from anger to sadness to frustration, grief. It is extremely troubling."
Since the pandemic begun, serious concerns have been raised about the quality and care of Canada's long-term care homes. "The allegations are incredibly serious," said Global News journalist Mercedes Stephenson.
Stephenson broke the story on Tuesday of military personnel describing a "'blatant disregard' for infection control measures, mistreatment of residents and a level of care described as 'horrible.'"
Global reports that "soldiers had witnessed cockroaches, flies and rotten food, residents left in soiled diapers and crying out for help for lengthy periods without any response" in the homes.
Addressing these allegations to reporters, Trudeau said that "over the last few weeks, our women and men in uniform have been working to help the most vulnerable Canadians as we deal with this pandemic."

"In Ontario, they've made some extremely troubling observations about several long term care facilities in which they've been serving, and we've shared this information with the provincial government," he added.
"We need to do a better job of caring for the people who built this country."
Long-term care homes have suffered disproportionately in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic in Canada. Earlier this month, it was reported that 82 percent of Canada's coronavirus deaths occurred in these care homes.
As well as this, there have been numerous reports of neglect and dereliction taking place in these facilities.
The military report on long-term care homes is due to be published shortly, however, it is clear that it will detail severe neglect of these facilities residents.
