Officials at Twitter have confirmed on Tuesday that the ban of former President Donald Trump's account is permanent and irreversible, meaning that under no circumstances do they expect to reinstate him to the platform.
Trump's Twitter account, through which he communicated directly with the American public, has been permanently banned since Jan. 8.
Twitter cited concerns about potential ongoing violence in the Capitol after the incidents of Jan. 6, for which Trump has been blamed by big tech, mainstream media, and congressional Democrats.
According to a report by CNBC, a Twitter executive made it clear that the Trump ban would not be lifted for any reason:
"As for Trump returning to Twitter one day, the company's CFO Ned Segal made it clear Wednesday that’s not an option. Segal told CNBC’s 'Squawk Box' Wednesday that Trump would never be allowed to return to the site, even if he decides to run for office again."
"We're a platform that is obviously much larger than any one topic or any one account," commented Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey on the issue.
The original statement issued by Twitter on Jan. 8 regarding the Trump ban read:
"After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence."
"In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action. Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly. It is built on a principle that the people have a right to hold power to account in the open."
Trump had not announced plans to make a run for office in 2024. Current impeachment proceedings against him in the Senate would, if passed, permit congress to disallow him from running for executive office ever again.
