WATCH: Tucker Carlson argues cause of Capitol riot was financial troubles—not white supremacy
“How many of them were open racists? By our count, five of them,” Carlson continued. “Five people out of 199 arrested? How is that a ‘white supremacist insurrection?’”
Fox News host Tucker Carlson took to his weeknight primetime show last night to discuss the cause of the Capitol Hill riot which took place on Jan 6, which many have described as a "white supremacist insurrection."
"Was it really a gang of white supremacists?" Carlson asked. "We went through the list compiled by the Department of Justice of the 199 people arrested for breaching the Capitol grounds that day."
"How many of them were open racists? By our count, five of them," Carlson continued. "Five people out of 199 arrested? How is that a 'white supremacist insurrection?'"
Carlson expressed frustration that members of the news media are so willing to take the stated motivations of BLM rioters at face value, but would not be anywhere near as charitable with those who stormed the Capitol. "Did anyone ask the people at the Capitol on January 6 why they were there?"
Carlson noted that the people who were present at the Capitol were not acting out of racist motivations, but rather genuinely believed the 2020 presidential election had been stolen. While not endorsing theories about election fraud, Carlson insisted that those who charge that the election was stolen are "wasn't entirely the protesters' imagination," arguing that American big tech companies waged campaigns to shift the election in Biden's favor.
He went on to criticize Democrats and some Republicans, most notably Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) for doing nothing about the power of big tech, and instead insisting we need a "9/11-style commission" for the riot and that the rioters should be treated like al-Qaeda terrorists.
"Nearly 60 percent of the people charged with crimes on Jan 6 had serious financial problems, including overwhelming debt, foreclosures, evictions, and unpaid taxes," Carlson noted, citing the Washington Post.
While condemning rioting, Carlson said that the rioters were largely upset over what they viewed as corruption in the American system and had become "reckless and angry."
"Liz Cheney doesn't want to talk about those reasons, she wants to continue talking about Donald Trump and racism and white supremacy," Carlson complained, asserting that she and people like her were "covering their tracks."
