In a press briefing Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki commented on current events in the Israel region saying that the White House is working with partners to "de-escalate" the skyrocketing violence.
She also announced in the coming weeks that they would nominate a "qualified, experienced" ambassador to Israel, adding that in the meantime "we have great confidence in our team on the ground in Jerusalem led by a career diplomat Johnathan Shriner who enjoys open and regular access to a range of senior officials."
"Johnathan and his team are fully latched up with both our team there, the State Department, officials on the ground," Psaki added.
Psaki added that United States engagement with the region, although not happening in the forefront of the publicity eye, is happening through "more than 10 phone calls by senior Washington based officials."
"So our engagement it, a lot of it is happening privately through diplomatic channels. It's happening with officials in the region," said Psaki. "We're in regular dialogue multiple times per day, as I noted, with Egyptian and Qatari officials, who have significant influence over Hamas. And our objective here is de-escalation as we look to protecting the people in the region."
The region exploded into violence earlier this month over Israel's move to evict Palestinians from the neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah. Since then, over 1,000 missiles and bombings have been exchanged between Israeli forces and Hamas, with shocking footage being uploaded to social media showing explosions in the streets.
