It was reported on Thursday that eBay began to remove listings for now controversial books by celebrated children's author Dr. Seuss. However, the online retail giant has left other controversial titles available for purchase like Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf.
Ironically, eBay now lists the censored Seuss books as "similar sponsored items" to the Nazi dictator’s book along with the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx.
The mass murderer wrote the autobiographical manifesto, translated as "My Struggle," while in prison, following a failed uprising in 1923. The book describes how Hitler became anti-Semitic, conspiracy theories about Jews, as well as his political plans and aspirations for Germany. In the book, Hitler wrote about his plans for the genocide of the Jewish race. Emil Maurice founding member of the Schutzstaffel (SS), which rounded up Jews for deportation to concentration camps and Rudolph Hess, Deputy Fuhrer to Hitler, edited the book.
White supremacist as well as Nazi materials and memorabilia are widely available on the platform as well.
eBay reportedly told sellers of the Seuss books, "We had to remove your listing because it didn't follow our offensive material policy. Listing that promote or glorify hatred, violence, or discrimination aren't allowed. Dr. Seuss Enterprises has stopped publication of this book due to its negative portrayal of some ethnicities. As a courtesy, we have ended your item and refunded your selling fees, and as long as you do not relist the item, there will be no negative impact to your account. Please review our Offensive Materials Policy prohibits this item [sic] for more information."
The ban left many trying to buy the books, launching them into the best seller spot. Universal Studios theme park in Orlando, FL. is considering changing it's Seuss-themed attractions. This all comes as President Joe Biden pulled Dr. Seuss' books from Read Across America Day, an initiative that was founded in the author's honor.
