As New York Attorney General Letitia James conducts an investigation into the sexual harassment allegations against Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, the Governor's office said that it is conducting a "parallel review" of the groping allegation against Cuomo, Times Union reports.
The review is only investigating the allegation that Cuomo groped a woman at the Governor's Mansion, and is not reviewing other sexual harassment accusations against the embattled governor.
"We have our own inquiries ongoing," said a senior aide to Governor Cuomo. "We have an obligation to investigate any claim of sexual harassment. And we, after reporting [the female aide's allegations] to the [Attorney General], were directed to continue our own inquiry… So there are multiple inquiries."
The Attorney General's office has not publicly commented on the parallel investigation, but someone in the AG's office reportedly said that they did not direct the Governor's office to launch it.
The accuser's attorney described the parallel investigation as "absurd."
"Why would you be doing that? It's not appropriate, and obviously we're concerned with the ramifications and the effect on witnesses and the quest for the truth," said the anonymous woman's attorney.
The attorney has also not made his identity public, allegedly out of fear that it could compromise the identity of the accuser.
Governor Cuomo continues to deny the allegations against him, which have not been proven in a court of law.
"As I said yesterday, I have never done anything like this," Cuomo said on Mar 10. "The details of this report are gut-wrenching. I am not going to speak to the specifics of this or any other allegation given the ongoing review, but I am confident in the result of the attorney general’s report."
Despite denying the allegations, Cuomo has also admitted that he may have acted in a way which made women feel uncomfortable.
Cuomo is now saying that he will no longer be commenting on the allegations, nor will he be commenting on the ongoing impeachment investigation against him in relation to the same allegations.
"I am not going to take any questions or have any comments on the review," Cuomo said in a call with reporters.
"Let the lawyers do their job and conduct the review and then we can talk about it when we have facts established… but other than that I’m going to respect the review and I won’t comment on it or related matters."
Cuomo did not mention the parallel investigation being conducted by his office in the call.
The sexual harassment and groping allegations against the Governor coincides with a separate scandal. Cuomo has been accused of covering up the number of coronavirus deaths in nursing homes over the course of the ongoing pandemic in order to deprive Republicans of talking points during the 2020 election cycle. It is estimated that the number of such deaths may have been undercounted by as much as 50 percent.
In response to the various scandals, politicians both Republican and Democrat have called upon the Governor to resign. Cuomo has refused to surrender the governorship, however.
