An Ontario man is facing felony weapons charges after New York state police discovered that he was carrying 58 handguns and multiple high-capacity pistol magazines in his trunk.

Police say that Badri Ahmed-Mohamed, 36, of Ottawa, was in possession of the guns and was only pulled over because he was speeding.

The arrest was made by Officer Kyle Regan, who was just sworn in as a full-time officer in Mount Morris, New York, just over two weeks ago.

"It's encouraging for us, knowing we've got young men and women who still want to do this work," said Chief Jeff Wiedrick, of the Mount Morris Police Department.

"I was patrolling the village and had a vehicle pass me at a high rate of speed," said Regal to local news outlet 13WHAM. "As I went up to the vehicle. The driver seemed very suspicious and starting shaking. I asked him if there was anything illegal in the vehicle, which he answered with 'yes.' I had the gentleman exit the vehicle. He gave me consent to search the vehicle, and then that's when I found the weapons in the trunk of the vehicle."

"I think it's significant to take 58 handguns off the street," said Chief Wiedrick. "Those are 58 guns that can't be used by criminals."

Ahmed-Mohamed was allegedly going to traffic the guns, and has been charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon. He is being held in jail on $100,000 bail or $200,000 bond.
