Liberal MPs express fear over WE scandal documents release

Ever since revelations of the WE Charity scandal emerged (where the prime minister ostensibly gave $912 million to two of his friends) the House of Common’s Ethics Committee has attempted to procure these records from the Trudeau family’s talent agency, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.

The attempts to locate these records were met with fierce resistance from a number of Liberal MPs. Quebec-based Liberal Brenda Shanahan, for instance, told her fellow MPs that "It [was] not the place of this committee to be exposing people by no other reason than that they happen to be related or otherwise connected with members of Parliament."

Going further still, Shanahan said the "privacy and confidentiality of these personal documents of individuals who are not members of Parliament, who are family members, [should] be safeguarded in every respect." She did not seem to mind that these records could reveal a more significant scale of government corruption.

If Jagmeet Singh’s poverty-stricken NDP permits it, the Ethics Committee will again attempt to receive these documents next week, ordering the Trudeau family talent agency to disclose these speaking fees.

Justin Trudeau has made a small fortune from speaking fees since he became a Member of Parliament in 2008. In total, Trudeau collected $277,000 from “unidentified sponsors” in his first term as an elected representative of the good Canadian people.

Alongside this, Trudeau’s family has reaped similar fees from Trudeau’s electoral success. Both the prime minister’s mother and his brother have both been paid sizable amounts (including from the WE organization) over the last decade or so.

Trudeau’s mother, for instance, charges sponsors $20,000 per appearance—leading to questions over who, exactly, is willing to fork out this amount of money on Margaret Trudeau.
