Snapchat recently featured on its front page a trans man who also identifies as a dog. The story is part of a series called ‘EXTREME LOVE’ and details the fetish of “puppy play” by the trans man and his partner. It shows the trans man dressing in fetish gear and living as a dog. This includes fetching, sitting on command, and barking at strangers. While most might view this as comedy, it’s entirely serious for the participants waffle on whether or not it’s sexual for them or just a platonic activity.
“Trans-species” is a movement garnering more momentum online. This entails individuals who identify as animals, similar to how people occasionally identify as another gender. Unlike transgenderism, however, there is of course no science or medical diagnosis to back this phenomenon up. It is often about sexual kicks rather than actual identity, which is why it becomes frustrating to transgender individuals to hear these fetishists use terminology such as “identify as… .” This terminology has long since been used by transgender people to better describe their feelings and experiences.
The question must also be raised as to why Snapchat felt it was appropriate to highlight a fetish on their front page. It’s a wildly popular app that many children use. Fetishes such as these used to be reserved for the bedroom or specific adult websites, but it’s becoming more and more normalized to act them out in public as often as possible.
While it may seem funny to most, we need not compare to attempt to equate these sexual acts to the lives or experiences of transgender people. Trangenderism, in its most common and medically valid state, has nothing to do with sexuality.
