The trans community needs to shake off its science-denying reputation

As a trans woman myself, I often find myself at odds with the direction that trans activists intend on leading the trans community. Prominent trans figures that the community has platformed to speak on our behalf parrot nonsensical rhetoric that may go over well among trans circles and their allies, but is essentially gibberish to the general population. Denial of the existence of biological sex, refusals to acknowledge there is any amount of imbalance between female athletes and trans-female athletes, and insistence that young children are always capable of making informed decisions about medical transition are commonly found amongst ideologue activists. These talking points are parroted even at the expense of trans people within the community who either disagree with them entirely or think there may just be some gray area to consider.

Unfortunately, it’s my belief that the most radical amongst us have become the poster children for who and what transgender people are. This is partly due to the media’s fixation on the loudest and craziest of the bunch (clicks and ad revenue will always follow), but also the silence, complicity, and blind loyalty many trans people feel toward all other trans people. Often times we are afraid to criticize our own ilk, even when they’re making a fool of the community.

Of course biological sex exists. I wouldn’t have felt the need to transition if I was not born a biological male who experienced gender dysphoria. Of course male-to-female trans athletes will often hold some advantage over the average female athlete. Of course not all children are capable of recognizing that they are transgender, even if some can. There are nuances and gray areas to acknowledge and provide solutions for in these conversations, but it seems to be only directed one way. It feels as though trans activists shout their nonsense into the world, and when it’s received by scoffs, laughs, and questions, they aren’t prepared to budge even an inch.

Assimilation by trans people into society is the key to achieving any type of equality, access to resources, or normalization. We have to be a part of the conversation, not just start our own conversation and still expect the rest of the world to follow our lead.
