"This historic settlement is a resounding defeat for the radical gender ideology that has preyed on Texas children under the guise of ‘care.'"
The $10 million settlement, which Paxton announced as finalized on Wednesday, revealed the new details surrounding what will happen next. Texas Children's Hospital has three months to open the clinic, which will offer free medical care to people who want to reverse their sex change treatments. The clinic must be finished by the end of October.
"This historic settlement is a resounding defeat for the radical gender ideology that has preyed on Texas children under the guise of ‘care,’" Paxton said in a statement. "Texas Children’s has agreed to pay millions back to Texas. The detransition clinic, which is the first of its kind, must open within months. Activist doctors who harmed children have been fired."
The settlement was first agreed to in May to resolve allegations that the hospital had provided child sex change procedures against Texas law. The hospital has denied all wrongdoing but has agreed to the settlement resolving the situation.
The settlement also "compels the permanent and irrevocable termination of privileges of multiple physicians and requires Texas Children’s to amend their bylaws to specify that performance of gender-transition interventions triggers automatic relinquishment of medical staff privileges," a press release from Paxton stated.
Texas Children's Hospital will pay out $10 million, with around $8.5 million going to the state. The clinic itself will be funded by Texas Children's Hospital for the first five years, and patients will not pay anything.
Paxton is currently in the running for the US Senate in a race against Democratic nominee James Talarico, who has previously said that he "loves" to see transgender children.
