Anti-semitic vandals desecrated a rabbi’s home in Surrey, B.C. with eggs and a swastika.

Rabbi Falik Schtroks is the co-director at the Centre for Judaism of the Lower Fraser Valley. He had his home attacked Friday, according to Global News

Zev Schtrok, the rabbi’s son who lives with his father, told Global News he was leaving the residence on Friday at 6:30 p.m. to meet his father at the synagogue and walk home with him.

As he was leaving, he saw a man near the property.

“He was holding a carton of eggs under his arm and he asked, ‘Is this the Jewish temple?’” Zev told the media outlet.

Zev responded that it was a Jewish temple. That prompted the assailant to begin pelting the building with eggs. Zev then recorded the man’s actions with his smartphone and called local police.

“Based on my martial arts background, I felt like I might have to do some self-defense. I felt threatened,” Zev said.

“I saw him walk up to the window, but I was not really paying attention. Later, I saw the swastika and, in the video, you can see a marker cap fall.”

While Zev spoke to police, the man escaped on foot.

Rabbi Schtroks said it could have been worse, and that police are currently investigating the incident.

“Like most Jewish people, I know our history and the call that went around on the internet to do something to Jewish people worldwide,” he said. “It is only eggs — that was my thinking,” he told Global.

Schtroks said the local Jewish community has been saddened by outbursts of anti-Semitism like this.

“Canada is a very peaceful country. Most people in this part of B.C. have come from somewhere else for a peaceful life and to have all of the darkness from our history books come and sprout here is completely unsettling.”
