"We are going to have to have some form of reparation for the kids and families that have been traumatized through all of this."
She said that if Democrats take back power in Congress, they will have to undertake several priorities regarding the immigration system. "We need defensive reform; we need to stop the things that are happening that should not be happening. We need offensive reform, we actually need an immigration system that works and recognizes the contributions of immigrants to this country and establishes legal pathways for people to come to this country and for people to be able to get citizenship when they’ve been a part of our communities for so long."
She said that there also needs to be "offensive actions around prosecutions," saying that "we need real accountability, because at the end of the day, the people that have been inflicting this harm need to be prosecuted. They need to be brought before us, and they need to be held in account for the trauma that they have created."
She added, "And we are going to have to have some form of reparation for the kids and families that have been traumatized through all of this."
Jayapal has previously come under fire for advocating for letting illegal immigrants remain in the US, citing that they pick the crops Americans eat. She was called a racist by critics.
"We can't let them deport the millions of families across this country who have been doing the work that keeps our economy going every day. We can't let them scapegoat and criminalize immigrants," Jayapal said. "Immigrants are us, and we all deserve respect and dignity. If you look at the food that's on your table, think about who picked it. If you look at your homes, think about who built them. If you look at your vulnerable elders and your kids, think about who's taking care of them."
