Two campaign staffers for Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar's challenger, Lacy Johnson, were shot on Monday in Minneapolis. One, a 17-year-old named Andre Conley, has died.
A suspect was taken into custody Thursday morning in connection with the shooting following a police pursuit, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.
The 17-year-old died at the scene while the other was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, MPR News reported.
“It is shocking and unnecessary acts of violence like this that prove why change is needed now more than ever in our community,” Johnson said, noting that the incident did not happen during any campaign events.
The two victims were standing outside a service station when they were approached and shot by the assailant, who fled on foot, according to a preliminary police investigation.
The Minneapolis Police Department said the identities of the victims will be released soon.
