Republicans (and Nancy Pelosi) urge boycott of Beijing's 2022 Olympic Games

Many argue China’s genocide of the Uyghur Muslim population as something much more serious than Georgia passing new voting regulations.

The upcoming 2020 Olympic games this year in Tokyo are scheduled to begin in July 2021. That being unusual given how the event had to be postponed given the onset of the pandemic last year.

However, according to The Daily Wire, Republicans are pouncing on the opportunity for President Biden to take a hard line against China for Beijing’s Winter Olympic Games in 2022. Many are pointing to Biden’s previous endorsement of pulling the MLB all-star game out of Georgia as a boycott against the passage of voting regulations in the state.

The recently revived Citizens for the Republic PAC is spearheading a renewed public awareness effort at China’s atrocities. CFTR chairman Craig Shirley told The Daily Wire that the USA shouldn’t play into a “false image” effort on China’s part to try and pass themselves off as a “nice, clean” place.

The focal point of CFTR's campaign is “the corrupt Communist government’s ongoing atrocities against pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong and the Turkic ethnic group known as the Uighurs.”

Something the current White House still needs reminding of in the midst of reported political softening.

Earlier this year Joe Biden glossed over China’s human rights abuses against Uyghur Muslims in the Xinjiang province as a “cultural norm.” This instance demonstrates a foreign policy weak spot of the current administration. A case where former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo took notice. Pompeo declared the Chinese treatment of Uyghurs a genocide on the last full day of the President Trump holding the overall office.

Last Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying publicly remarked the US was “shameful and dirty.” A clear signal that Beijing has no interest in playing nice with America in the first place.

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her part is on board with boycotting China’s Olympics next year. Today she called for the United States and leaders across the globe to engage in a “diplomatic boycott,” where various heads of state don’t attend even though their athletes still participate in the event.

CFTR’s Shirley says that’s not enough. “Americans should support a boycott of athletes in the West from going to China. It has to be a boycott of athletes, a boycott of participation, a boycott of corporations, everything, across the board.”

On the other hand, Pelosi has some basis for international confidence in her call to action. In late April the UK Parliament unilaterally voted in favor of declaring China of committing genocide against the Uyghur population.
