"Police = slave patrols. Voter ID =poll taxes. #NAACPBombing = KKK bombings."
On Thursday, problematic posts from the Department of the Interior senior spokesman Tyler Cherry resurfaced on X while requests for comments from the Biden Administration went unanswered.
According to Fox News, posts from Cherry's past include posts about the US being a racist country, calling police officers a "direct evolution of slave patrols," along with promoting the "Russiagate" scandal in multiple posts.
In one post from April 2015, after the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody, Cherry Wrote, "Praying for #Baltimore, but praying even harder for an end to a capitalistic police state motivated by explicit and implicit racial biases."
In another from January 2015, he wrote, "Police = slave patrols. Voter ID =poll taxes. #NAACPBombing = KKK bombings. Neither slavery nor Jim Crow WERE THAT LONG AGO. We just evolved."
On October 5, Libs of TikTok posted pictures of several posts that Cherry made in the past. One of the posts read, "Extra heavy sigh. 'Truth is there is no substantial white power movement in this country. Trump won the election because of economics' WRONG."
In another post, he asked why his whole family is racist. He posted a year later about how he ruined Thanksgiving the year before "by sparing with my uncle about systemic racism and police brutality."
The White House responded to a request for comment from the Advocate about the people highlighting the previous posts, claiming that they were targeting him for his sexuality. A spokesperson said, "No one should be targeted simply for being themselves."
"It is cruel and unacceptable," they continued. "This is an administration that believes to our core in the principle that out of many we are one — and we are proud that the people who serve in it reflect those values as well. Tyler is an invaluable member of our team who continues to deliver for the Department of Interior and the American people.”
Cherry also worked on President Biden's presidential campaign and joined the Department of the Interior in 2021. Reports show that he also worked for the progressive publication Media Matters.
