The Democratic National Committee (DNC) paid $1.5 million for President Joe Biden's legal payments in Special Counsel Robert Hur's investigation into the president. The revelation comes at a time when the Biden campaign has repeatedly attacked 2024 presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump for using campaign funds to cover being hamstrung by several court cases.
According to a report from Axios which looked over the payment records of the DNC, the organization shelled out $1.5 million to lawyers and firms representing Biden during the probe.
The probe into Biden began in January 2023. From July 2023 to February 2024, the DNC covered $1.05 million in legal payments to Bob Bauer PLLC, which is the legal company headed by Bauer, the president's top lawyer in the probe. The payments went largely to handling the probe into Biden. Last July, the DNC also increased payments to the law firm Hemenway & Barnes. The increase in payments went from $15,000 to $100,000 a month.
Jennifer Miller, of Hemenway and Barnes, who worked on the probe case as one of Biden's attorneys, is identified in the special counsel's report. When asked exactly how much money went towards the probe into the president, the DNC declined to get specific. Meanwhile, the Biden campaign has ramped up rhetoric against Trump for using campaign funds to pay off legal bills in several cases made against the former president.
The Biden campaign slammed the RNC for picking up some of Trump's legal fees as well as fees in 2021 that stemmed from a civil case. Since 2022, the funds have come from his campaign.
Recently, Biden's campaign finance chair told MSNBC that "every single time you give to the campaign, we're going straight to talk to voters…We are not spending money on legal bills or hawking gold sneakers," taking a jab at Trump in the comment.
In a thread posted by the official Biden-Harris HQ account, the campaign took aim at a recent fundraiser from the former president, claiming it was held "to pay his mounting legal bills" and added, "Here are some of the scammers, racists, and extremists funding Trump’s failing campaign."
