REVEALED: Florida trans teen Julia Egler murdered mother, boyfriend over being 'misgendered'

"Well me and her would have a lot of arguments about things, especially like me being trans, and she'd be like 'you're not a real boy... the whole spiel of transphobic stuff."

Julia Egler, the young woman who was convicted of shooting her mother and her mother's boyfriend to death in Florida, admitted that she committed the murders because her mother "misgendered" her. Footage from a police investigation into the case shows Egler, who preferred being called Jasper, saying that her trans identity was the root of many arguments.

Egler was arrested in July 2024 when she was 16-years-old. She had originally told police that there had been a home invasion and that the intruder had murdered her mother Kelley McCollom and Matthew Szejnrok. She said at the time that her mother "was not very accepting."

In the video, Egler said of McCollum, "Well me and her would have a lot of arguments about things, especially like me being trans, and she'd be like 'you're not a real boy,’ and blah blah blah, and y'know, the whole spiel of transphobic stuff."

A detective asked Egler, "She didn't approve of your lifestyle, she doesn't approve of that?"

"She was trying kind of to meet me in the middle," Egler said, "but it wasn't really working all that well all the time. She would try to call me child instead of—'cause it's more like gender neutral rather than kind of meeting in the middle I guess."

She was asked if "this was the root of a lot of arguments, or maybe not the root, but a thing that is brought up in these arguments" and Egler said "it was a thing that was brought up a lot in arguments."

"Is she misgendering you?" A detective asked.

"Yeah," Egler said.

"So when you guys are arguing, is she intentionally calling you 'she,' or not using the appropriate pronouns, or not referring to you as Jasper and referring to you as Julia."

Egler confessed at the time of the killings to using a .38 caliber revolver that she took from her mother's room. She used that to shoot McCollum and Szejnrok. Her mother died instantly, but Szejnrok was still alive. Egler stabbed him repeatedly with a chef's knife, but Szejnrok asked her to reload the gun and kill him.
