REVEALED: Former NYC DSA official jailed in 2015 for soliciting sex from minor for threesome

Matthew Thomas, a former staffer for Queens, New York, Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, and Councilwoman Tiffany Cabán, was arrested and served three months in jail in 2015 after soliciting a 16-year-old boy for a threesome with former Delaware Deputy Attorney General under Beau Biden, Daniel Simmons. 

According to the New York Post, Thomas has served as an official and is still an active member of the Queens branch of the Democratic Socialist of America organization (DSA). 

Thomas pleaded guilty to second-degree conspiracy in 2015 in exchange for prosecutors to drop charges of sexual solicitation of a child, Delaware Online reported at the time. He did not receive charges of rape like Simmons did, because Delaware law allows for sex with a 16-year-old if you are under 30.

On March 19, 2014, the 16-year-old met Thomas on Grinder, and was picked up from school and driven to Simmons’ house. Police said the three had sex in the living room and bedroom.

In 2017, Thomas legally changed his name, dropping Coogan from his name. He went on to work for Councilwoman Cabán in 2019 and Assemblyman Mamdani in 2020. 

Mamdani told the Post, "I didn’t know about this before I hired him." 

The Democratic Socialist of America organization has been organizing pro-Hamas protests across the country since the October 7 terror attack on Israel. In a now-deleted post on X, Thomas seemingly blamed Israel for the attack on its citizens. 



"The deaths of hundreds of israeli civilians today is a terrible crime, one that highlights the urgency of bringing an end to the conditions that generate this sort of brutality," he said. "the military occupation of palestine and the zionist political project writ large."

Speaking on the protest by the DSA, Republican Councilwoman Vickie Paladino asked the outlet, “How much more evidence do we need that the DSA is a cancer on our politics? Between the rampant antisemitism exposed over the last few weeks, and now this?”

In discussing Thomas' crime, She said it was "the very definition of grooming." Paladino noted, “That Democratic Socialists and the hard left have repeatedly pushed for highly sexualized content in our schools cannot be a coincidence." She said, "Their reaction to this will be very telling. And it’s incumbent upon the mainstream Democratic party to do something about their deep ties to this poisonous organization.”
