Obama has good reason to fear Trump's abilities.
Obama allegedly warned his successor at the June 27 meeting in the White House residence that Trump wielded more political power among Republicans and their supporters than many on the left have cared to admit.
Two people familiar with the meeting told the Washington Post that Obama cited the 45th president's devoted fanbase, apparent control over the GOP, and the increasingly pro-Trump conservative media ecosystem as causes for concern going into 2024.
He reportedly expressed his faith in Biden's political abilities and vowed to help him in any way possible to ensure Democrats emerge victorious when Americans head to the polls next November.
According to the Washington Post's sources, the meeting was not called to discuss the issue of Trump in particular, rather it was simply a regular catch-up lunch for the two political pals.
Obama has good reason to fear Trump's abilities. Poll after poll has shown the former president to be the Republican frontrunner, with his next closest rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, trailing by dozens of points. A recent poll conducted by Sienna, for example, put Trump at 54 percent, 37 percent ahead of DeSantis.
In hypothetical matchups between Trump and Biden, 45 has repeatedly been shown to have an advantage over his successor.
Obama was quite active in the leadup to 2020, accompanying Biden on numerous stops during the campaign trail. He has vowed to do the same this time around, since his popularity among Democrats has not waned.
In October 2022, Obama took aim at Trump during a rally with Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer, blaming him for the surge in violent crime, an issue that has plagued Democrat-run cities for years.
