Though the American public were repeatedly led to believe that the connection between Joe Biden and a high-level executive at Ukrainian energy firm Burisma was a fabrication, it turns out that there was connection, through Biden's son Hunter Biden, who introduced the elder Biden to Burisma execs.
After this new information came to light, a the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee intends to investigate the documents obtained.
"I have never spoken to my son about his overseas business dealings," Biden said in 2019. These newly obtained emails show that this characterization is not correct.
It was while Hunter Biden was employed by the firm that the government of Ukraine began an investigation into Burisma, and Joe Biden, upon delivering aid to Ukraine, demanded that the prosecutor leading the investigation prior to the delivery of aid be fired. Biden knew the execs as well, because he had met with them.
Reporting from the New York Post reveals through newly obtained emails that it was Hunter Biden who initially introduced his VP dad to Burisma executives, less than a year before the elder Biden demanded the firing of a Ukraine prosecutor. Hunter introduced his dad to Burisma execs about a year after he joined the Burisma board, receiving a monthly $50,000 from the energy company, and before Biden demanded the prosecutor's job in exchange for $1 billion for Ukraine.
An excerpt from an email sent from the phone of Vadym Pozharskyi on April 17, 2015 denotes what appears to be a request to meet up with Hunter Biden after having already met with the Vice President.
"Dear Hunter, thank you for inviting me to DC and giving an opportunity to meet your father and spent some time together. It's really an honor and pleasure. As we spoke yesterday evening, would be great to meet today for a quick coffee. What do you think? I could come to your office somewhere around noon or so, before or on my way to the airport."
An additional email from earlier in 2014 shows Pozharskyi looking to Hunter Biden for advice, suggesting he could, "use [his] influence" for the company.
Eight months after Joe Biden's introduction to Burisma executives, the company would come under investigation by Viktor Shokin, Ukraine's Prosecutor General. In what would be the future subject of fiercely contested narratives, Biden would famously demand that Shokin be fired, suggesting that Ukraine would lose critical United States funding if the Prosecutor General wasn't removed.
Biden was in Kyiv in December 2015, set to announce a large, $1 billion load to Ukraine. In his own words, he said he would withhold the money if the prosecutor who was investigating Burisma was not fired.
In 2018, at a Council on Foreign Relations, Joe Biden said "I said, nah, I'm not going to—or, we're not going to give you the billion dollars. They said, you have no authority. You're not the president. The president said—I said, call him. I said, I'm telling you, you're not getting the billion dollars. I said, you're not getting the billion. I'm going to be leaving here in, I think it was about six hours. I looked at them and said: I'm leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor is not fired, you're not getting the money. Well, son of a bitch. He got fired. And they put in place someone who was solid at the time."
Biden threatened to withhold the loan if Ukraine did not fire a prosecutor that was investigating the company with which his son Hunter Biden was involved, and it turned out he knew the executives as well, and had met with them personally.
The prosecutor was fired. Since then, the American public has been told that Biden was acting directly under guidance from President Barack Obama in demanding that the aid be given only after the Ukraine government bowed to pressure to remove a prosecutor from his post. But this revelation of his involvement with Burisma throws his actions into question.
The emails were lifted from a laptop computer that was seized by the FBI in December. It was allegedly left at a Delaware repair shop, and belonged to Hunter Biden. Additional material on the laptop were revealed to be raunchy videos of Hunter Biden, where he engaged in sexual activity with an unknown woman, as well as drug use.
The owner of the repair shop did not identify the owner of the computer as Hunter Biden, but the work order has Hunter Biden's name on it, and the laptop had a sticker on it from the Beau Biden Foundation.
