Toronto police search for suspect involved in hate crime

Police say the suspect approached the 52-year-old man who was ordering his food at a restaurant and made an anti-Asian comment towards him. The suspect then punched the man and fled the scene.

Toronto police are searching for a suspect involved in a suspected hate crime at a Scarborough restaurant, CP24 reports.

The incident, which send a 52-year-old man to the hospital on Sunday, occurred at the Midtown Plaza in the area of Midland Avenue and Sheppard Avenue East just before 7 pm.

Police say the suspect approached the 52-year-old man who was ordering his food at a restaurant and made an anti-Asian comment towards him. The suspect then punched the man and fled the scene.

The 52-year-old was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries.

"After consultation with the Service's specialized Hate Crime Unit, the assault is being treated as a suspected hate crime," a Toronto police news release states.

According to the release, "the suspect is described as 40-50 years old, 5'10", 180 lbs, clean shaven and had a cut on his head. He is believed to have been in a four-door grey 2016-2018 Nissan Altima. He was with another man who is described as white, bald, wearing a blue sweater, dark pants and dark shoes."
