Trans suspect smashed mother's face with a hammer in violent Laguna Beach murder, body found by grandmother: police

More details have emerged about the trans son who has been accused of killing his mother, 61-year-old Angela Caprioli, by bludgeoning her to death with a hammer at a home in Laguna Beach, California.

Safford James Wolfson, 36, has been arrested after police were called to the scene when Wolfson’s grandmother made the gruesome discovery of blood-spattered walls and smashed furniture in Wolfson’s home in Laguna Beach. 

She found Wolfson on the floor, covered in blood, before locating Caprioli's body in a bedroom with serious head and facial injuries from blunt-force trauma. She called police, and Wolfson was taken to the hospital with self-inflicted wounds to his neck.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said Wolfson has been charged with murder, as well as a felony charge enhancement for using a deadly weapon. Spitzer commented on the tragedy, “It is heartbreaking to think that someone could so violently end the life of the very person who gave them life.”

Wolfson was taken into custody three days after the incident and is being held on $1 million bail, with an arraignment set for October 1.

A neighbor, Dustin Pettit, told the California Post he'd seen Wolfson and Caprioli in what looked like a heated exchange outside the house shortly before the killing: "I saw her outside talking with him and it seemed like a pretty hostile conversation." Pettit added, “She turned around and went inside and slammed the door, like she was fed up with whatever was going on. I was like, ‘What the hell is going on here?’”

Neighbors said Wolfson mostly kept to himself, sometimes stepping outside to smoke or play guitar, and that he'd moved in roughly six months earlier. Pettit noted the property had long been neglected and overgrown, and that police had been called there repeatedly in the past. He also said Caprioli had arrived about a week before the killing in a red pickup truck.

Wolfson's social media has drawn scrutiny since the arrest. His X bio reportedly describes him as a "trans girl looking for fun in LA," and TikTok videos linked to him show him dancing in dresses and other feminine clothing. His LinkedIn lists him as co-founder of Kevin's House LLC, a sober-living and mental health care facility in Southern California. Caprioli’s Facebook describes her as the founder of Kevin’s House.
