He added that "as part of that process, the government of Canada has committed to the Ukrainian government to identify whether some of these guns could be donated to support the fight for democracy in Ukraine."
Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc announced Wednesday that there will be an "amnesty period" in which those who possess these now-illegal firearms will be protected from "criminal liability as they take steps to come into compliance with the law." The amnesty period will end in October, 2025.
There will be an "exception" during the amnesty period for indigenous peoples, as well as hunters who use these now-illegal guns to hunt.
"As with the previous list of firearms, these models will, of course, be part of the assault-style firearms compensation program," said LeBlanc. "And, to that end, I’m pleased to point out that the pilot program of phase one of the gun buyback program is now underway. The program will be open for all businesses in the coming days."
He added that "as part of that process, the government of Canada has committed to the Ukrainian government to identify whether some of these guns could be donated to support the fight for democracy in Ukraine."
According to the Canadian Press, there are over 2,000 makes and models of firearms on the list of prohibited guns in Canada.
