Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has warned that the Canada-US border will remain closed for some time due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Trudeau said it would be likely that this restriction will remain in place for weeks as the federal government toughens up their mandatory quarantine laws for all travellers returning to Canada.
Trudeau went further still, saying that it will be a while before the government would ease up restrictions or before they would look to kickstart the ailing economy.
Having said this, Trudeau is considering options that would allow schools and some businesses to open before other restrictions are lifted.
Speaking to reporters, Trudeau said "I know that everyone is very interested to know when things are going to get back to normal, when they’ll be able to go back to work, when we’ll be able to leave this isolation at home. The reality is, it is going to be weeks still."
Trudeau said, somewhat contradicting his government's earlier position, that "travel restrictions are going to remain extremely important in terms of containing the spread of COVID-19."
"We're going to continue to work with the Americans and people around the world, to ensure that we continue with these restrictions," he added.
