The Trudeau Liberals will apologize for discriminating against the all-black battalion that served in World War I.

During a news conference on Monday, Defence Minister Anita Anand told reporters that the Trudeau Liberals have been in contact with descendants of the No. 2 Construction Battalion since last year, saying that there were plans in place for the government to formally apologize.

An apology is due, they say, due to Canada's refusal to allow black men to fight overseas in 1914.

The Canadian military would eventually grant approval to the battalion to fight overseas, following two years of protests. This led to the creation of a segregated, non-combat battalion.

Minister Anand revealed that the apology would take place in July in Truro, Nova Scotia.

According to The Canadian Press, over 300 battalion members who enlisted were from Nova Scotia. Other members were from New Brunswick, Ontario, the West, and the United States.
