Former President Donald Trump has offered his full-fledged endorsement of Viktor Orban for his re-election as the Prime Minister of Hungary.
Orbán, a conservative and populist nationalist, won the 2018 Hungarian parliamentary election by a landslide over his opponents. His party, the Fidesz-KDNP alliance, acquired more than 49 percent of the constituency vote, more than double that of its nearest contender.
In a posting titled “Endorsement of Prime Minister Viktor Orban,” the Republican former president lavished praise on his Hungarian counterpart.
“Viktor Orban of Hungary truly loves his Country and wants safety for his people,” Trump began before highlighting Orban’s achievements.
“He has done a powerful and wonderful job in protecting Hungary, stopping illegal immigration, creating jobs, trade, and should be allowed to continue to do so in the upcoming Election,” Trump wrote. “He is a strong leader and respected by all.”
Trump concluded: “He has my Complete support and Endorsement for releection as Prime Minister!”
The upcoming Hungarian parliamentary election will be held in either April or May 2022, and will see opposition parties in a joint coalition to oppose Viktor Orban’s Fidesz-KDNP alliance under Peter Merki-Zay representing United for Hungary.
The United for Hungary coalition is made up of centrist conservatives, socialists, neoliberals, and green politics environmentalists.
Orban’s national conservative coalition currently holds 133 out of 199 total seats.
