"On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as the Librarian of Congress is terminated effective immediately."
An email was sent to Hayden from the White House deputy director of presidential personnel, which addressed her and then read, "On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as the Librarian of Congress is terminated effective immediately. Thank you for your service," the Washington Post reported.
Hayden, who was the first black female to hold the position, was the first career librarian to have the role in years, which is usually held by scholars or historians. Hayden has previously been in charge of the Baltimore library system and has served as the president of the American Library Association (ALA). She held the role at the ALA from 2003 to 2004.
Hayden was caught up in controversy when she invited Lizzo to play James Madison's crystal flute while the singer twerked on stage.
Recently, Hayden has also come under fire for pushing left-wing content by the conservative American Accountability Project (AAP) group. According to the Daily Mail, Hayden has denounced parents for wanting to not give content to children regarding sexual identity and she has donated substantially to Democrats.
Prior to her firing, the president of AAP, Tom Jones, said to the outlet, "The President and his team have done an admirable and long-needed job cleaning out deep state liberals from the federal government. It is time they show Carla Hayden and Shira Perlmutter the door and return an America First agenda to the nation's intellectual property regulation."
The group also posted in recent days, saying, "The current #LibrarianOfCongress Carla Hayden is woke, anti-Trump, and promotes trans-ing kids. It’s time to get her OUT and hire a new guy for the job!"
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) took issue with the firing, calling the act a "disgrace."
“Donald Trump’s unjust decision to fire Dr. Hayden in an email sent by a random political hack is a disgrace and the latest in his ongoing effort to ban books, whitewash American history and turn back the clock," Jeffries said.
When Hayden was questioned during her confirmation hearings in 2016, Hayden defended keeping pornography filters off public library systems, claiming that doing so would restrict patron's access to health information, the Post reported.
