"It is a GIFT from me of something which was always missing from this magnificent place."
On Wednesday, two large flagpoles were installed at the White House, paid for out of President Trump’s own pocket. Each flagpole stands at 88 feet tall, with one being placed on the North Lawn and the other being placed on the South Lawn.
In a post announcing the installation of the poles, Trump wrote, "It is my Great Honor to announce that I will be putting up two beautiful Flag Poles on both sides of the White House, North and South Lawns. It is a GIFT from me of something which was always missing from this magnificent place."
He added, "These are the most magnificent poles made – They are tall, tapered, rust proof, rope inside the pole, and of the highest quality. Hopefully, they will proudly stand at both sides of the White House for many years to come!"
Trump was seen saluting the flag as it was raised on the new South Lawn pole alongside family members. Ahead of the flag raising, Trump was seen greeting and shaking the hands of those working on installing the pole.
Addressing reporters before the raising, Trump said, "The White House opened about 1800, a little before that, just a tad, and I've always said, 'Why doesn't it have a flagpole from the grass?' ... They have a little one on top, very little one. This is about the largest you'll ever see. And its tapered, it at a quality that you guys rarely get to put up," he said, talking to the workers behind him.
Per USA Today, the flag on the North Lawn pole was unable to be lifted due to thunderstorms that rolled into the DC area on Wednesday afternoon.
