"American heroes such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Thomas Sowell, Justice Clarence Thomas, and countless others represent what is best in America and her citizens."
In a statement recognizing February as "National Black History Month," Trump said, "Throughout our history, black Americans have been among our country's most consequential leaders, shaping the cultural and political destiny of our Nation in profound ways. American heroes such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Thomas Sowell, Justice Clarence Thomas, and countless others represent what is best in America and her citizens."
"Their achievements, which have monumentally advanced the tradition of equality under the law in our great country, continue to serve as an inspiration for all Americans. We will also never forget the achievements of American greats like Tiger Woods, who have pushed the boundaries of excellence in their respective fields, paving the way for others to follow," Trump added.
Trump said that America is about to enter a new "Golden Age" and extended his thanks to the many black Americans in history who have made contributions to the United States. Trump added, "I call upon public officials, educators, librarians, and all the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities."
The proclamation from Trump comes as the administration has taken steps to end any DEI program that takes funding from the federal government, possibly indicating that programs associated with the term, will not take place as the White House recognizes Black History Month. The Defense Department, for its part, has indicated that it will not be putting on celebrations for Black History Month or other identity-related months.
"Installations, units, and offices are encouraged to celebrate the valor and success of military heroes of all races, genders, and backgrounds as we restore our warrior culture and ethos," the DoD said in a statement.
