Trump meets with Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowes execs at White House to discuss tariffs

President Donald Trump hosted executives from some of the largest US retailers at the White House on Friday, discussing how Trump’s tariff plans could affect their businesses. This comes as Trump has implemented a 90-day pause on his reciprocal tariffs.

Per CNBC, Target chief executive Brian Cornell and Walmart CEO Doug McMillon were in attendance as well as executives from Lowe’s and Home Depot. The meeting was not on the president’s public schedule. 

Following the meeting, a Walmart spokesperson said, "We had a productive meeting with President Trump and his team and appreciated the opportunity to share our insights." A similar statement from Target read, "We had a productive meeting with President Trump and our retail peers to discuss the path forward on trade, and we remain committed to delivering value for American consumers."

Home Depot said in a statement, "We had an informative and constructive meeting with the President and look forward to continuing the dialogue."

The meeting comes as Trump has paused reciprocal tariffs on many countries, while increasing tariffs on China. Walmart, CNBC noted, "is in a better position than many of its competitors" because around two-thirds of what the company sells in the US is made, grown or assembled in America. The final third is imported from across the globe, with China and Mexico being the “most significant” supplier countries, Walmart chief financial officer John David Rainey said at an investor event in Dallas. 
 

Per Bloomberg, Walmart has said that it is working to keep prices low in response to tariffs. Target has not revealed how much of its items are sourced from overseas, but has said that price increases would vary by item category. Home Depot has said that over half of its products are sourced in North America.
