Americans' trust in the FBI has taken a sharp nose-dive in the wake of the agency's raid on Mar-a-Lago, and the seizure of documents from former President Donald Trump's home.

A new poll released on Thursday from the Trafalgar Group for the Convention of States Action, found that Americans overall are split in their opinion of the FBI, with a slight majority of independent voters siding with Republicans against the FBI.

46.6 percent of those polled said that the FBI is "to be respected for their pursuit of justice and law and order," while 46.2 percent said that the FBI is "too political, corrupt, and not to be trusted." 7.2 percent of Americans said they weren’t sure.

Independents leaned towards siding with the Republicans, with 47.9 percent saying the FBI is not to be trusted. 43.7 percent said that they respect the FBI.

Americans overall were equally as split in regards to the question, "Do you believe the Justice Department's investigation into former President Trump is only intended to prevent him from running for office in 2024?"

48.6 percent responded "yes," while 48.5 responded "no."

Split by political party, Democrats overwhelmingly said that they did not believe this was the Justice Department’s intention, while Republicans responded resoundingly in the affirmative.

Independents were once again nearly split, with a slight majority, 50 percent, saying that this was the Department of Justice’s intentions. 47.8 percent responded no.

In regards to whether voters believe the FBI and DOJ are telling the truth about their reasons for conducting the raid, 48.7 percent responded yes, while 48.6 percent said no.

The poll was conducted between August 19 and 23 of 1092 likely general election voters across the US.
