The artist has reportedly been in contact with members of Trump’s inaugural committee about unveiling the statue during the inauguration.
A massive two-story bronze statue of President-elect Donald Trump is currently under construction to capture the moment he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last summer.
According to a report by Breitbart News, the statue is expected to be completed by Trump’s inauguration in January. The project, commissioned by cryptocurrency investors associated with $PATRIOT, is being sculpted by Ohio artist Alan Cottrill. Cottrill is known for creating the Thomas Edison statue in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall and has designed various presidential statues for universities and museums.
Cottrill is designing the Trump statue to depict the moment when Trump raised his fist and shouted "fight" to rally attendees after a bullet from would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks narrowly missed him.
“I’ve sculpted and cast 400 life size or larger bronze statues across America and the Patriot Statue is our largest single figure to date,” Cottrill said in a statement to Breitbart. Dustin Stockton, a leader of the project, estimates the statue will be finished by the new year. He described the design as reflecting Trump’s larger-than-life persona.
“The statue had to be Trumpian. It had to be larger than life and over the top,” he said.
Stockton has reportedly been in contact with members of Trump’s inaugural committee about unveiling the statue during the inauguration. Following its debut, the statue will embark on a year-long national tour. Organizers hope it can then be put on display in Butler, Pennsylvania, and later have a permanent home at the future Trump Presidential Library.
In addition to the main statue, Cottrill is crafting 10 smaller 18-inch bronze replicas dubbed "Patriot Awards." These miniature statues will be awarded to notable figures in the Make America Great Again movement during a ceremony prior to the inauguration.
“It’s been one hell of a ride the last decade; the PATRIOT project, statue, and tour is our way of claiming how these incredible times are remembered by history,” Stockton said.
