"U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately."
Moore was detained late on Wednesday evening, according to the Detroit Free Press. He is now being held in the Washtenaw County Jail. The Pittsfield Township Police Department said on Wednesday that officers responded to an alleged assault investigation, but did not name the suspect. As of Thursday morning, official charges have not been filed.
Police said in a statement, "For the purposes of investigating an alleged assault ... A suspect in this case was taken into custody. This incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community."
"The suspect was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor," the statement continued. "At this time, the investigation is ongoing. Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details."
The University of Michigan said in a statement over Moore’s firing, “U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately. Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of university policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”
The statement did not go into the details about what had been discovered in the investigation. Moore is a married man and has three daughters. Paige Shiver, who has also taken down her social media as news of Moore's spread, is reportedly the staff member who was in an alleged affair with Moore, according to reporter Justin Spiro.
Shiver apparently works for the football team’s staff and does administrative tasks, per Yahoo Sports. A portion of Moore’s contract states that the university can fire him if “Conduct by the Head Coach which offends against public decency or morality, as shall be determined by standards prevailing in the community or which results in, or in the reasonable determination of the University could result in, material injury to the reputation, interests or obligations of the University or the Program.”
Moore has been the coach at Michigan for the Wolverines from 2024 to 2025 and has led the team to an 18-8 record over the two seasons.
