Victoria's Secret has been under immense backlash over the past few years after succumbing to the "body positivity" movement.
This comes as Victoria's Secret has been under immense backlash over the past few years after sucummbing to the "body positivity" movement, nixing some of the world's most beautiful supermodels to make room for plus-size models and those who are conventionally unattractive. Its famous fashion show was cancelled in 2019 after now-retired VS Chief Marketing Officer Ed Razek told Vogue in a 2018 interview that they didn't want plus-size and transgender models on the runway, saying that the show is meant to be a "fantasy" consisting of models with unattainable beauty standards.
In 2024, the renowned fashion show returned, showcasing a diverse range of models, including trans models and "body diversity." Fans claimed that the brand still fell short, with many calling for VS to return to its previous practices of using just the cookie-cutter models that made the company famous. VS began incorporating some of its previous models into the show last year, including their former VS Angels, a moniker regarded as one of the highest in the fashion world. However, for this year's show, the brand seems to be choosing "nepo baby" models and influencers over some of the world's most-beloved supermodels, according to its models list.
Strijd, 31, a former bombshell Angel with millions of followers on social media, thought she had a shot and worked for months to make it back on the glitzy runway. She said she went to the September audition in New York, but was rejected on Monday after they were non-communicative.
"It's a no, which is fine because rejection is part of modeling, and that's totally fine," said a teary-eyed Strijd in a TikTok video. "So, my agency just called and I said, 'Okay, what's happening?' And she said, 'You look great...but they thought you wouldn't fit in the show this year.'"Strijd, a young mother of two, was devastated and stated that she would most likely not audition for the show again, adding that she wants to cherish the "good memories" she made as an Angel and did "not like the way she was treated."
Norweigan runway model Freida Aasen responded to Strijd and said that she was also rejected from this year's show. Aasen frequented the VS runway before it was taken off-air. She was not an Angel.
Reports then surfaced that supermodel, Lais Ribiero, a VS Angel who wore the highly-coveted "fantasy bra" in 2017, was also reportedly rejected from the show.
Fans are outraged over their rejections and Victoria's Secret is now facing a boycott. One fan warned online that the industry's preference for influencers over supermodels would "bite" them "in the a**," while another fan fumed that VS was "rejecting beloved veterans for influencers."
The full model list for this year's show has not yet been disclosed. However, the 2025 fashion show included several influencers, such as social media creators Gabriela Moura and Quenlin Blackwell, who appeared alongside female athletes Angel Reese and Sunisa Lee.
Victoria's Secret has not publicly commented on Strijd's rejection.
