In a tweet, the Washington Post praised President Biden’s liberal Catholicism, while appearing to portray those who oppose abortion as right wing.
Their decision to call Biden "a very Catholic president who supports abortion rights" was met with backlash from Christians who opposed the labelling of those who are anti-abortion as "right-wing."
In the accompanying article, The Washington Post spoke of the growing divide among American Catholics when it comes to support for Biden. "Having a U.S. president who attends Mass week after week and talks about his faith is powerful to millions of American Catholics", they begin, "but to millions of others, a Catholic U.S. president enacting one policy after another in favor of abortion access is a source of shame."
There will be a vote at this years U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops regarding whether or not to draft a document "on the topic of Communion", the article later says.
The Associated Press reports that the document would "make clear the USCCB’s view that Biden and other Catholic public figures with similar viewpoints should not present themselves for Communion."
Communion is "the holiest of Catholic sacraments that shows a believer’s union with the whole church and Jesus", and The Washington Post has reported that Catholic leaders in Biden's homes of Delaware and D.C. would not be denying him the ability to take it.
According to the Catholic News Agency, President of Catholic Vote Brian Burch criticized the media's portrayal of Joe Biden as Catholic. "For decades public officials have flouted the Church's call to protect innocent human life,” said Burch. “Now we face the scandal of a president who professes to be Catholic but calls for the destruction of innocent unborn children, and he forces those who object to pay for it anyway.”
Burch's organization has even gone so far as to create a chart detailing all the times President Biden went against Catholic teachings.
National Review journalist David Harsanyi blasted The Washington Post for their biased coverage, calling the media giant "garbage".
