In an interview with Carlson, best-selling author Abigail Shrier spoke up about the growing phenomenon of de-transitioners, as well as how activists are beating doctors in the medical arena.
"[Doctors] are trying to start to speak up," Shrier began. "The Society for Evidence Based Gender Medicine is formed recently; it's a consortium of doctors from across the west who are very concerned and oppose affirmative care."
She went on to describe how "nearly every medical accrediting organization has adopted affirmative care", leading doctors to fear losing their license if they act against the policy.
Affirmative care, Shrier explained, is when "the doctor's job is to affirm or rubber-stamp the patient's self-diagnosis, even of minors, when they decide their problem is gender."
"Is there any other procedure ... to which that applies?" asked Carlson. "If I walk in and say I want chemotherapy, and the physician says 'I'm sorry, I don't detect cancer'; I want it anyway, the physician can turn me down for that treatment, right?"
"Absolutely," Shrier replied. "This is the only area of medicine where we do this, and it's basically turned our doctors into life-coaches."
Shrier described the practice as "profoundly unscientific."
She went on to point out that Ken Zucker, chair of the committee responsible for writing the definition of gender dysphoria in the DSM-5, was fired after activists called him a transphobe.
Shrier then mentioned a new, growing segment of the population, de-transitioners.
"The one thing [activists] haven't been able to cover up," she said, "is the de-transitioners, young women who are regretting that they were pushed through these treatments; they're speaking up all the time, more and more of them."
De-transitioners were the focus of a recent "60 Minutes" special on CBS. Many of the de-transitioners featured in the segment had already undergone surgeries and hormone replacement, and warned others about giving adolescents the ability to make irreversible changes to their bodies at such a young age.
