On Wednesday, former president Donald Trump was arraigned in New York after Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged him with thirty-four counts of falsifying business records in the first degree.
Speaking with FOX News' Tucker Carlson later that evening, civil rights attorney Harmeet Dhillon defended Trump, suggesting that the entire process was politically motivated to help Democrats defeat Republicans in 2024.
"Why did the judge allow cameras into the court to take pictures of Trump?" Carlson asked. "That seemed like part of a political strategy, not a legal one ... What did you make of that?" The judge had disallowed video cameras but allowed still photographers into the room. This after the Trump legal team had successfully petitioned for there to be no mug shot of the former president and 2024 presidential contender.
Dhillon told Carlson that she was on the same page. "If the Democratic Party is using this prosecution ... to influence the outcome of the next election," she explained, "this photograph is going to be a prop in those campaign ads."
She went on to suggest that though a gag order had not been issued, the judge's admonishments of Trump, warning him not to use "rhetoric" when openly discussing the case, the judge was "effectively chilling [Trump's] speech."
Her analysis was that Judge Mercham was saying "'You better stay away from an imaginary line that I'm not gonna draw for you' ... while at the same time not putting any constraints whatsoever on the district attorney."
Dhillon warned that as a result, Bragg has the potential to "completely ignore his oath to do justice and pre-judge that the defendent is already guilty."
"This entire proceeding seems to be clearly rigged in a political manner," she stated, suggesting that Democratic Party had "basically turned into a gang of thugs."
"There is no concept of due process," Dhillon lamented. "There is no concept of even with a straight face attempting to tie the charges to something that you can prove in a court of law that could stand up on appeal."
Following his arraignment, Trump gave a speech in Mar-a-Lago which drew quite the crowd. Dhillon suggested that he should have emphasized that "this indictment is really aimed at the American people."
"It's aimed at terrorizing people away from supporting a particular candidate," she said, "and it is meant to remind all of us that if they can do this to a former president, they can concoct false charges without even articulating what the charges are, against any American for political reasons, and that is a form of emotional terrorism."
