It was recently revealed that Liberal Justice Minister Arif Virani's government-issued vehicle had been stolen yet again, marking the third time in as many years that auto thieves have targeted the holder of that position.
During a press conference in Vancouver on Friday, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre highlighted the "irony" of the situation given the Trudeau government's soft-on-crime policies.
"It was recently reported that Trudeau's own justice minister had his car stolen in as many years," TPM's Jarryd Jaeger began. "If this isn't enough to convince the Liberals to take action and crack down on auto theft, what is?"
"Sorry," Poilievre responded, chuckling, "it's just hard not to laugh at the irony of it ... These car thieves have no gratitude. Here the justice minister is letting them out of jail for stealing cars. You'd think that they would show him some courtesy in exchange, but instead they keep stealing his car!"
Poilievre called the whole situation "unbelievable," saying it was just another example of how things have gotten after eight years of Justin Trudeau.
"Everybody is at risk now," he added. "We didn't have these stories before Trudeau. He has caused an explosion in car theft."
The Conservative leader offered some hope for the future, noting that "it wasn't like this before Trudeau, and it won't be like this after he's gone."
"Under the previous Common Sense Conservative government, we cut car theft by half," he explained. "Anyone doubting these common sense policies I'm laying out work, remember, we cut car theft by half, we cut violent crime by 25 percent. We brought crime down with our common sense policies; they work, they're proven, let's bring it home."
According to the CBC, documents tabled in the House of Commons last week revealed that Virani's Toyota Highlander was stolen in November 2023, just months after being nabbed the first time. In both cases, the vehicle was recovered.
Former justice minister David Lametti had his Highlander stolen in February 2021.
