In Thursday's White House press conference, Press Secretary Jen Psaki voiced her support for the Biden administration's new Disinformation Governance Board despite not being sure of the exacts of its mission or authority.
On Wednesday, the Biden administration's Department of Homeland Security announced the creation of the Disinformation Governance Board in an effort to counter the spread of misinformation related to homeland security.
Speaking about the board, and its new head Nina Jankowicz, Psaki expressed her support, but admitted she did not know exactly what the end goal was.
One reporter brought up that fact that "[Jankowicz] had previously called the Hunter Biden laptop a 'Trump campaign product,' seeming to discredit its validity."
"How can you assuage concerns of people who are looking at this person who's been appointed to this position and wondering if she's going to be able to accurately judge misinformation now that a lot of that reporting has been proven to be factual in some ways?" she asked Psaki.
Psaki sidestepped the question, refusing to comment on the laptop or Jankowicz' previous comments.
"What I can tell you," she replied, "is that it sounds like the objective of the board is to prevent disinformation and misinformation from traveling around the country in a range of communities."
"I'm not sure who opposes that effort," she added.
Fox News' Jacqui Heinrich further pressed Psaki on what exactly the board's job would entail.
"Can you give us an idea of what this board is going to be doing? What their authority would look like?" she asked.
"I really haven't dug into this exactly," Psaki responded, adding nonetheless that "we, of course, support this effort."
"We know that there has been a range of disinfo out there about a range of topics, I mean, including COVID, for example, and also elections and eligibility."
Psaki told Heinrich that she'd "check and see if there's more specifics."
Since its announcement, the Disinformation Governance Board has garnered criticism, much of it focused on the fact that those in charge of it have been accused of purveying disinformation themselves.
